The Consultant Profile is a regular feature of Angel Investor News. It offers a thumbnail sketch of angels and investors across the country who share their tips and experience about how to invest successfully.

Who: Manny Ratafia

Where: Connecticut

Experience: Ratafia founded several technology-based corporations. After funding and running his own ventures, Ratafia now focuses on start up medical devices, factory automation devices and other high tech ventures, in which he chooses not to take a management role. Prior to being an entrepreneur and angel investor, worked for Irex Medical Sytems and later Booze Allen & Hamilton and Dow, doing strategic consulting in the chemical, medical products and other technology based industries.

How: Has an extensive background in marketing research and development consulting. Founded Technology Management Group, a management and market development consulting firms, focusing on biotechnology and related development firms as well as several other, smaller software ventures. Comes from a family of entrepreneurs both in the United States and Europe. Co-founded the entrepreneur association while a student at Dartmouth's Amos Tuck School of Business.

How Many Deals:  Has closed 11 deals as an angel investor. Ran five of the companies and later sold them off. In three deals was not involved in management. Invested $1 million in the largest company. In addition has funded several small businesses with seed money.

Amount of Investment: Looking to make deals in the range of $200,000 - $800,000. Focuses on deals involving medical devices and sensors and high-tech factory automation devices. 

Tips for Entrepreneurs: Considers this a good time for entrepreneurs because many have given up, creating less competition. However, thinks entrepreneurs might have to adjust goals from where they were a year ago. Investors are more realistic in the ventures they fund and it reflects in lesser amounts invested in companies. The dot.com frenzy has passed, sobering many investors. Has seen a growing number of  business plans with solid ideas that are worthy of due diligence.
